1st south section 1st open welsh national f.c. lilliers
the first outing and campaign for the welsh national flying club from the continant took place of fri 27th may from lilliers basketing went as normal on thursday evening but in light of the unpredicable forcast for the sat it was arranged by our transporting comittee the wnr federation to release the pigeons between 11 am and 12 noon on the friday ,the convoy arrived on site around 9am after their early dover to calais ferry crossing and preparations were soon underway to get the transporter ready for release as scheduled at the home end there was a brisk west north westerly head wind with a few showers around the kent area of the country and a west north westerly wind over the channel for the birds to face so we were aware that the birds were in for a hard task ahead of them upon liberation, leading the field with 1st south section first open winning the r.g.davies corn and pigeon supplies sponsored trophy is the consistant newport partnership of kidd& cook timing in a two year old cheq cock at 16.39 with a velocity of 1232 whilst the partnership of andy and trevor are the main fanciers named, theres also terry williams who does a lot of the manual jobs around the lofts troughout the week and also takes a lot of pleasure on this weeks performance 2nd open 1st centre section is the partnership of davies and coombes of pengam near blackwood timing in a yearling blue cock flying 189 miles on a velocity of 1152 for 3rd open 2nd centre section we go to the partnership of morris and lucus from hengoed timing in their yearling red hen at 17.29 recording a vel of 1133 3rd centre section 4th open with a two year old cheq hen is the loft of mark tantram from pontlainfriath timing in at 17.34 vel 1108 for 5th open 2nd south section we head down to the west of the capitol to the loft of connie desnyder timing in a two year old chea cock at 17.33 vel 1105 finishing the top six positions once again leading the north section is the loft of derek flowers of pontypool with his fancied five year old blue hen at 17.29 vel 1102 as you can see the leading fanciers are no strangers to top flight racing throughout the country and are always amoungst the shake up week in week out be it a tail wind or in this case a difficult obsticle so well done each of you on your performances on this occation you can gather by the gaps in velocities in the final result , this proved to be a bit of a dodgy affair with a large number of pigeons away by early evening ,however a fair number did turn in late into the night and the following morning and todate we are hearing that they are still turning in some days later ,yes a few have been reported on the french belgium coasts ,but this doesnt warrent the rumours that are circulating the pigeon fraturnity through out wales, fanciers are indicating that the transporter didnt turn up on site until 30 minutes before liberation secondlly that the weather was too bad to liberate? well we can confirm via a recent meeting the wnr federation race advisory committee and convoyer that the weather on site was declared good enough to liberate at the time they did this was confirmed by another organisation who were on site awaiting their scheduled liberation on sat morning thier statement of affairs on the day were as follows the wnr fed transporter arrived on site around 8,45 am and not 10.15 as claimed by a few , the weather itself wasnt that bad to warrant a delay in the liberation however the main factor in their eyes was the wind element but indicated it was good enough to go and they would have gone themselves if they were in the same position , they also confirmed that there was a brisk west north west wind at lilliers and that even though a large batch of birds did clear soon after libertion , the majority didnt show any indications of making there way home for some time later , so what do we base the the outcome of the race on now that the dust has settled, is there a lesson to be learnt somewhere ?i dont know or is it something we put behind us and move on ,we may be down but we are far from out and we will bounce back from this but as we all gather now the birdage for the following brussels and beyond races will be hit dramaticly but that wont stop the enthusasum of our competitors who will turn out and continue their support to the wnfc in the coming weeks and aim for the glory of winning 1st section 1st open and the prestiege that goes with it
