MAIDSTONE 2

so here we are the final event of 2013 ,and with poor weather conditions delaying basketing by a week , preparations for the final young bird national from lillers were taking place on saturday morning the 21st sept for the sunday morning liberation
with the birds all collected shortly after noon the convoy headed eastwards to dover in preparations for the late evening ferry crossing to calais and with an hour or so travelling once on french soil the transporter soon arrived on site without any problems
sunday morning and as a result of the easterly winds .the line of flight was at present not clear enough to liberate and with local reports from dover coastguard and locals from various locations including friends colin and linda asher who live local to joss bay in ramsgate and having a clear view of the channel ,indicating like wise there seemed no alternative with very little improvement forecasted that shortly after mid day we learnt the decition was made hold the birds over until monday ,
monday morning
once again the weather was agaisnt us once again as our race advisors, searched endless avenues to find a window clear enough and long enough to release the birds and to provide a race for our competitors ,unfortunatelty it was again a midday call indicating that with no chance of a continental liberation, and hearing news that other welsh organisations also on the lilliers site had made the decition to bring there birds home , john watkins and his race advisory committee seen a break in the weather for tuesday that indicated that there was an oppertunity of a release from maidstone yes, its a hundred miles shorter than the 250 from lilliers but under these conditions a shorter race piont was the only option other than bringing the birds back to our marking stations to be reunited with there owners which would have had to have been the final option however after undergoing such a long drawn out weekend and with no chance of a liberation over the channel a shorter race was planned and the lorry made its way back closer to home ,
tuesday morning
and with everything in place on site at maidstone in kent we were once again experiencing the same weather that has hampered us for the past past few days with a dominant full cloud cover through out the southern counties it was however forecasted to lift as the day went on ,after sitting out the morning we were advised that a decition would be made at 1pm as to wether or not there was a chance to liberate or to bring the birds home and a 2pm deadline was put in place as after that time there was no ther alternative
at 1.30 that there was a buzz in the air as the convoying team reported back that the sun had finaly broken through and blue skies were reported over maidstone these improvements could be seen westwards towards the home end and on checking the line of flight in windsor, berkshire and wiltshire areas it became apparent that a two oclock liberation was on the cards if these conditions continued to improve , at the home end we were also experiencing a break in the weather with broken blue skies appearing in variuos locations resulting in a final check on the line of flight the strings were eventually cut and the birds released at 2pm into a light east south easterly helping wind
so we were away after 72 in the basket the final event for the welsh national f.c. was on ,may we take this oppertunity of thanking john watkins ,will holpin our hard working race advisors and contacts over the weekend and of course our convoying lads for patiently sitting it out and providing us with this race. ,week in week out were hearing of heavy losses and race controllers and convoyers undergoing verbal abuse regarding liberations ,however its pleasing to congratulate these hard working individuals for putting so much time and effort into ensure the safe passage and welfare for our pigeons ,not only on this occation but throughout the entire 2013 race programme resulting in very few losses
leading the field with 1st centre section 1st open we go up into the rhumney valley to the well known loft and partnership of morris and lucus timing in at 17.37 with a velocity of 1350.5 the winning pigeon a young cheq pied hen ,the sire of which orignates from the pontypool lofts of derek and clive flowers who themselves are multple national winners in wales the sire of this weeks winner is son of the flowers partnerships giessen cock ,when paired to a daughter of their 1st and 2nd national winners .on the dams side is a grand daughter of one of Chris Gordons national winners previous results for this hen include 72nd national hythe and 132rd national hythe
sadly rumour has it that the morris and lucus partnership are calling it a day at the end of the 2013 season and a sale is on the cards in the winter months ,so what a rewarding way to bow out of the sport with a 1st national win in the closing races ,.
for second centre section 2nd open by the narrowest of margins with a vel 1350.3., is the blackwood loft and partnership of nigel hackland & son ,who timed in one of their janssen cross entries originating from his good friend mark tantrum who has now emergrated to australia crossed with a frans lan frisman dam, this young blue hen was sent flying to the perch and whilst she hasnt scored in the past national events, was in fact the partnerships first arrival in the clock from ramsgate 200 miles when she took 1st club but unfortunatley wasnt one of nigel`s national entries on this occation .
for 1st south section 3rd open we head south to newport where we once again visit one of the highly profiled lofts in wales through out 2013 the partnership of kidd and cooke timing in at 17.21. with a vel of 1349 ,im informed by andy that this weeks arrival is bred along the same lines as the partnerships 1st maidstone national winner just a few weeks ago and originates from from the norfolk lofts of colin and amber clarke and is based around the llambrecht bloodlines
to round off the top four its yet another newport loft of mr mrs kevin upham who timed in at 17.18 with a vel of 1348.0 ,to take 2nd south section 4th open ,the partnerships pigeon comes down through a very well known welsh loft of hayden minett who retired from the sport last winter this blue hen is bred down from haydens pigeon named "mr t" and "ewan" ,added to this weeks performance this loft and partnership have also been informed that they will also be recieving the mr & mrs t harris sponsored young bird average trophy for 2013 ,
what a way to finish the season off with four lofts from various locations fighting it out for the top spot resulting in decimals dividing them ,this only pays tribute to the care and attention these pigeons recieved over the days leading up to the liberation.
we as an organisation have once again complimented our membership with yet another good seasons racing ,like previouslly indicated our losses have been minimal over the past nine races with only the fourgeres race being our only stumbling block when the returns were a little unfortunate for some however ,we went on to the extrme distance after that and bounced back with tours 350 miles tarbes 600 miles and bergerac 500 miles and were rewarded with some outstanding performances from our membership whilst being convoyed by the woec and cscfe via the welsh north road federation .
as tradition goes and with all the racing finished its time to thank the personel for their hard work ,john watkins ,will holpin and the rest of the race advisory committee ,david humphries and the lads who pick up and travel to the race piont and look after the birds on site ,and of course the welsh north road fedration for once again providing the transport to these races at competative rates which enables us to exsist, of course without saying we aknowledge our many sponsores for once again providing thier support throughout the year including chris sutton our appionted photographer for travelling from liecester to photograph our 2013 winners ,also our fellow management committee who give up so much of their valued time to guide the wnfc during the year and finally , you the members for the support and encouragement and the will to win that makes this organisation so competative
so we draw this year to a close now with the national presentation night in partnership with the welsh north road federation on sat 14th december at the seamans mission club in newport to date 70% of the tickets have been allocated indicating that for the third year running we are on course for another sell out attendance ,
on rounding off the year we as secretaries would like to high light that at the start of 2013 we underwent some major transformations when we resigned our affiliation from the whpu due to a change in there rules and to ensure the future of the wnfc ,over the weeks and months that followed we had to overcome many obsticles which were placed in front of us from outside parties as a result of this ., however in light of the actions taken by the the officals of this orgaisation we were able to overcome these and would like to praise the support of our membership and to thank our winners and competitors for their support and encouragement in our campagin to continue to provide you with a smooth running organisation and hope this and our success and possible new challenges that are due to fall into place for the 2014 season continue .
