the welsh national flying club continued their 2013 overseas race programme from tours an average distance of 340 miles to most
lofts within the principality,as expected our numbers were down but this wasnt going to be a surprise to us in light of the route change for this
season
for this event the the birds were race marked on thursday night as advertised and were then convoyed over the severn bridge by the the wnr
federation where they liased and were handed over to the west of england combine who supplied the transport to this race piont,
saturday morning and with a good run of fine weather we were pleased to hear that the 2,000 plus english and welsh pigeons were away nice and early at 06.15,into into clear skies and a north by north easterly head wind for the duration of the journey home.
as usual estimates circulating as they do, with pigeons hopefully being on welsh soil around eight hours plus marker, which would predict an
estimated speed of 38 to 40 mile an hour and considering the conditions and distance involved we were hopeful not to be far out and that we would see a good outcome come clock checking.
for the leading pigeon this week we head to treharris to the father and son, partnership of mathew and joseph hughes for 1st centre section 1st open winning the proff sport and dutch spring exchange challenge trophy
the partnership are no strangers to the top spot after winning 1st wnfc folkestone in 2012,the winning pigeon timed in at 14.35 to record avelocity of 1215.7 flying 350 miles is a two year old red hen is a full sister to their 2012 national winner which is bred down from the partnerships
marc and lillly verheyde stock crossed with the their original raymond molevedes through the "strong wings" lines, this game little hen which braved the 350 miles into a continuous head wind has flown consistant over the past seven races that she has been entered into scoring the following results 2nd club newbury 2nd section 26th open newbury 2,543 birds 5th open national 7th sec 8th open wnrf 2,282 birds maidstone,11th sec 22nd section wnrf 1,528 birds 15th open national ramsgate and also just a week earlier scored 1st club newbury 3rd sec 11th open 1,211 birds along with these results she also scored as a19th national maidstone

another loft which has maintained a high profile within the wnfc for 2013 is brian price of blackwood who is once again amoungst the leading positions timed in at 14.49 v 1174 to claim 2nd centre secton 2nd open ,brian informs me that the pigeon which he timed in was a 2yr old widowhood cheq cock, is the same way bred as his ramsgate section winner which originates from the bargoed loft of iddy davies in the form of eggs which were purchased crossed with the brasspenings lines obtained from brians good friend billy powell also of bargoed from the treherbert lofts of graham warren,im informed on the day of basketing this cock has thrown his first flight and was well up for the challenge ahead of him
for 1st section 3rd open we head to the south section to the risca lofts of john newbury who timed in a 4yr old cheq hen at 14.40 with a vel of
1173 the bloodlines comes through the "alexandra" lines on the dams side who recorded the only bird on the day from kassel 540 miles in 2004 which then went on to win the whpu queens cup winner for the late glyn cousins of newport which were originated from the partnership of crook&smith of caerphilly, crossed southwells .,on the sires side its the scarbourgh lofts of frank sheader sootjen which is dominant in the pedigree
this experienced hen has been a consistant for john over previous years just like her grand mother with many club and federation performances along with 15th open 4th south section bonn 450 mles and 7th south section brussels 340 miles
for 1st section 3rd open we head to the south section to the risca lofts of john newbury who timed in a 4yr old cheq hen at 14.40 with a vel of

for the final loft that we report on this week with 3rd centre section 4th open we head back to the top of the valley to one of our furthest flying lofts
within the wnfc that of the husband and wife partnership of dylan and tracey russel from ebbw vale, who timed in a 5yr old mealy cock at 15.06.39 vel 1158.0 from their old home blended janssen family of pigeons which has been the base for this loft going back many years and have achieved many club and federation performances plus 2 x1st north section winners in the wnfc in 2012 from brussels and bonn
so thats it another race under our belts and all considered a good hard channel race with a good winner ,the feed back im hearing from our members is the condition of the pigeons on their return, which was a compliment to the convoying team of the west of england combine and a big thank you goes out to them and everyone involved for their hard work in supplying us with a good race,on clock checking once agin it was mixed pleasures as some loftsreported 60% returns and others wernt as fortunate but hopefully the entries that were adrift at nightfall would get through in the following days
well thats it for now in the next month we move further a field to our longest races which are tarbes 600 miles and bergerac 500miles ,and whats
making it more interesting for us as an organisation is that new fanciers are making enquiries as to jioning us to give big events a go ,no we aint going to be sending hundreds or even thousands of entries to these races as fanciers condition thier entries well in advance in regards to nest conditions etc and have already undergone some hard races due to the continuous northerly winds
,but what we can be asured of is that the winners of these races will be justified and aknowledged for their efforts and the rewards that acompany such challenging distances, to add a little more spice to these events we are honoured to be convoyed by the central southern classic ,where our members if they wish can now duplicate from the cscfc to the welsh national .fc
